- The World Bank is supporting Peru-s cities in promoting safe, clean, sustainable, and affordable transport through the Sustainable and Resilient Urban Transport in Regional Cities and Metropolises of Peru Program.1 The Program is being developed with Promovilidad, an entity that forms part of the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) and was established in 2019 with an objective of implementing integrated public transport systems in Peru's major cities through technical assistance, capacity building, project formulation, and funding.Promovilidad, through the MTC, has requested technical assistance from the World Bank to develop a comprehensive Program focused on sustainable urban mobility and traffic management in regional cities and metropolises of Peru. Promovilidad has prioritized actions to improve urban mobility in six (6) cities of Peru (Arequipa, Trujillo, Piura, Huamanga, Cusco, and Chiclayo). The Program would include the implementation of exclusive lanes for public transport, bus stops, rehabilitation of roads, expansion of bicycle lanes, and other sustainable mobility interventions, in accordance with the priorities and commitments of the authorities of the subnational governments in each territory.The Program is planned to have four (4) main Components, with the specific combination of interventions depending on the specific city. These include: (1) interventions to support sustainable transport services (road infrastructure, design of exclusive bus lanes, and bicycle lanes); (2) control and management of traffic and road safety (traffic light networks and control centers, automated systems for detecting traffic violations, high accident points, and low-traffic neighborhoods); (3) institutional strengthening through technical assistance; and (4) program management component.
